Is Nova Right for My Child?

Nova is a structured preparation programme. It is the right choice for families with a clear goal and a child who is ready to be challenged.

Year 1 Pupils Preparing for 7 Plus

Children sitting the 7 Plus in January of Year 2. Our Developing Skills programme begins the previous September — or earlier for children who benefit from a longer runway.

Year 2 Pupils Preparing for 8 Plus

Children targeting selective school entry at Year 4. The 8 Plus demands greater depth — our programme extends into more complex comprehension, multi-step mathematics, and advanced NVR.

High-Attaining Pupils Seeking Academic Challenge

Children working comfortably above age-related expectations who need material that genuinely stretches them — thematically rich, intellectually demanding, and taught one-to-one.

Families Targeting Leading Independent Cchools

Our tutors include practising examiners at the schools your child is applying to. That inside knowledge of what those schools are actually looking for is not something you can find elsewhere.

The Trouble With Most Tutoring Options...

Large
Tutoring
Marketplaces

Aggregator platforms connect you with thousands of freelancers. There is no shared curriculum, no structured programme, no quality control, and no accountability beyond the individual session. Your child's tutor on Monday has no idea what happened last Thursday.
No programme.
No structure.
No guarantee.

Unvetted
Independent
Tutors

Without examiner experience, without original materials, and without a structured learning plan, even a well-meaning tutor is essentially making it up as they go. Enthusiasm is not expertise. Having sat a GCSE in English is not the same as knowing how a 7 Plus examiner thinks.
No exam expertise.
No materials.
No accountability.

Generic Online
Revision
Tools

Passive, content-led platforms generate worksheets but build no relationship with your child. They cannot adapt to how a particular child thinks, reward moments of genuine progress, or prepare a six-year-old for the experience of a selective school interview.
No personalisation.
No feedback.
No human connection.

How the Nova Programme Works

A structured, five-stage journey from initial assessment to exam-day readiness. Every stage has a clear purpose — and every parent is kept fully informed throughout.

1. Free Consultation

A personal call with a senior Nova tutor to understand your child's current level, learning style, and the schools you are targeting.

2. Personal Learning Plan

Your tutor confirms the right programme (Developing Skills or Mastering Skills) and the session schedule, tailored to your exam timeline.

3. Weekly Tuition

60-minute one-to-one sessions. Sessions 1–3 in person to build the tutor–child relationship; all subsequent sessions online via Zoom.

4. Progress Reports

Session notes after every lesson. Unit reports every two sessions. Mid-programme and End-of-book reports with full scores and analysis.

5. School Entry Preparation

As the examination approaches, our tutors draw on their direct experience writing and marking 7+ and 8+ papers to ensure your child is genuinely ready.

The Nova Difference

Six things that are structurally different about the way Nova works — none of which a marketplace tutor, a freelancer, or a revision site can offer.

Proprietary
Curriculum

Every course book, practice paper, and session guide is an original Nova resource — not adapted, not licensed, not sourced from a third-party publisher. The curriculum is ours, and it is written specifically for the examinations your child is preparing for.

Examiner
Expertise

Several Nova tutors are practising 7 Plus and 8 Plus examiners — the teachers who write and mark the actual papers at selective independent schools. That knowledge cannot be found on a tutoring marketplace. It is a structural advantage.

The Nova Tutor Academy

Every tutor completes a formal 12-module accreditation programme before their first session. There is no "experienced tutor" without evidence — there is a documented selection process, a training record, and a quality assurance system that applies to everyone.

Progress
Reporting

Session Notes the same day. Unit Completion Reports every two sessions. A Mid-Programme Report at Unit 5. An End-of-Book Report with a formal Certificate of Programme Completion. You will never be left wondering whether it is working.

Safeguarding

Every Nova tutor holds a current Enhanced DBS check — verified before a single session begins. Nova operates in full compliance with UK statutory safeguarding guidance. Our Designated Safeguarding Lead oversees every aspect of the programme.

A deliberately
small team

Nova does not scale by adding any tutor who will accept our rate. We maintain a small, curated team of qualified teachers — each trained on our materials, each known to us personally, each held to the same uncompromising standard.

Preparing for Selective Schools at Every Stage

Nova offers structured tutorial programmes for the most important examinations in independent school admissions.

Each programme uses the same examiner-written materials, qualified tutors, and full reporting suite — tailored to the demands of each examination.

What Do Parents Say About Us?

⭐ Finally, a challenge worthy of my daughter.

"My daughter found standard papers too easy. These Extension papers finally gave her the challenge she needed. The comprehension questions really make her think."
Sarah M., Parent of a 10-year-old

⭐⭐ Questions that build real critical thinkers.

"The difference is in the questions. They don't just ask 'what happened' – they ask 'why did the author write it this way?' and 'what effect does this create?' Perfect for developing critical thinkers."
Dr. Amina K., Educational Consultant

⭐ Transformed my son's logical thinking.

"My son's verbal reasoning skills have improved enormously. The questions in these practice papers pushed him to think more deeply about logic and reasoning."
David L., Parent of an 11-year-old

Frequently asked questions

How many sessions are in a programme?

Each book contains 10 themed units, with two sessions per unit — 20 sessions in total. A full Developing Skills programme runs approximately one academic term. Your tutor will recommend whether to continue to Book 2 or progress to the Mastering Skills series based on your child's performance and the exam timeline.

Why are the first three sessions in person?

Children aged 6 and 7 build trust through physical presence. Meeting a tutor face-to-face — in the same room, without the mediation of a screen — creates a quality of relationship that makes everything that follows more productive. Our experience is consistent: children who begin with in-person sessions settle into online sessions faster, engage more confidently, and handle challenging work with greater resilience. The transition from in-person to online at Session 4 feels like a continuation, not a change.

How does payment work?

When you book your free consultation, you will choose a session slot via Calendly. Payment is handled through Stripe at the point of booking — you pay when you confirm your place, and all session reminders and Zoom links are sent automatically via Calendly. Programmes are available at a deposit plus monthly instalment plan or as a single upfront payment. Full details are discussed at the consultation stage.

Are all tutors qualified teachers?

Yes. All Nova tutors hold qualified teacher status. Several hold postgraduate qualifications in education. All have been selected through a rigorous process, trained on the Nova programme, and hold a current Enhanced DBS check. Several tutors are also practising 7 Plus and 8 Plus examiners — they write and mark the papers your child is preparing for. Nova does not recruit through agencies or tutoring marketplaces.

What is included in the programme fee?

20 one-to-one tutorial sessions, mid-programme and end-of-programme practice tests, and the full reporting suite — Session Note after every session, Unit Completion Report after every unit, Mid-Programme Report, End-of-Book Report, and Certificate of Programme Completion.

What is the Nova Tutor Academy?

The Nova Tutor Academy is our internal training and accreditation programme. Every tutor completes 12 training modules before delivering their first session — covering teaching technique across all four subjects, the Nova session structure, reporting standards, safeguarding, and parent communication. Tutors progress through four accreditation levels (Associate, Accredited, Senior, and Master) based on their session record and quality assurance reviews. It is the system that makes Nova's quality consistent and scalable.

Can I change or cancel sessions?

Sessions can be rescheduled with a minimum of 24 hours' notice. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice may be charged at the full session rate. Your tutor will always try to offer an alternative slot within the same week where possible. Full cancellation and withdrawal terms are confirmed at enrolment.

Book a Free Consultation

Your free consultation is a personal call with a senior Nova tutor — not a sales call, not an automated assessment. It is a genuine conversation about your child: their current level, their learning style, and the schools you are targeting. We follow up with a written recommendation and programme plan.
  • Choose a time — select an available slot in the calendar to the right. All consultation slots are 30 minutes.
  • Confirm your place — payment for the consultation is processed securely via Stripe at the point of booking. You will receive a confirmation and Zoom link immediately.
  • Speak with your tutor — Calendly sends all session reminders automatically. Your tutor will call you on Zoom at the scheduled time.
  • Receive your plan — within 24 hours, we send a written programme recommendation and enrolment details if you decide to proceed.

Booking & Payment

Sessions are booked and paid via Calendly + Stripe. All payment is handled securely at the point of booking. Zoom session links and reminders are sent automatically. Nothing extra to set up.
